Bayelsa workers strike over unpaid salaries


Bayelsa workers have decided to embark on an indefinite strike – The workers say they do not believe the state want the best for its workers.

The strike was declared following the expiration of an ultimatum Amidst the on-going nationwide strike action in the country over removal of fuel subsidy, workers in Bayelsa state have decided to embark on an indefinite strike but over months of salary arrears owed by the state.

The Punch reports that the workers declare the strike will begin on Thursday, May 19. The workers had issued a 21 day ultimatum to the Bayelsa state government to pay all outstanding salaries and allowances and it elapsed on Wednesday, May 18.

The state chapters of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress had issued an ultimatum to the government on Thursday, April 28. They had warned the government that if they failed to comply with their demands, they would take serious actions.

The workers are currently owed four months salaries while pensioners being owed seven months arrears. Local government council workers have not been paid for 12 months, the NLC and the TUC at the Council Secretariat in Yenagoa concluded that they could not guarantee the existing industrial relationship in the state.
